Biocomposites supports Haiti humanitarian effort
Posted January 2010

Biocomposites, the pioneers in ceramic materials for bone repair, has supported the humanitarian effort in Haiti by providing £10,000 worth of Stimulan® a synthetic bone graft material, to a leading US Orthopaedic surgeon from California, who is travelling with a team of medics, to the devastated region.

The harsh conditions in Haiti have resulted in many people getting infections in their injuries sustained from falling buildings. Reports from Haiti regarding infection are severe with one person claiming that “sterility is so bad they are trying to sterilize a lot of things with Vodka!”

Stimulan®, is an ultra pure, synthetic bone graft material and is licensed for use where there is an infection present in the bone and complements the use of antibiotics. Stimulan has many unique features for a bone graft that make it the best possible material to use in these cases. When implanted, it resists infection from bacteria and starts to form new bone, repairing fractures and fusing broken bones.

Biocomposites’ Managing Director Stephen Bratt said “the performance we see in Stimulan, when used in infected cases, gives us confidence that the products donated to Haiti will help to save limbs and even lives”.
