A landmark in Sports Medicine
Posted in March 2009
Biocomposites has recently presented an award to Prof. James B Richardson (Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic and District Hospital, Oswestry, UK), in recognition of his invaluable contribution to the development of the Bilok® interference screw, the world’s first globally marketed calcium composite implant for use in orthopaedic surgery.
The award was presented by the President of Arthrocare’s sports medicine division, Jack Giroux, during the recent AAOS exhibition in Las Vegas, USA. Arthrocare are the global distributors of Bilok® technology in sports medicine.
The Bilok® screw is the first absorbable device to clinically demonstrate osteoconductivity and complete resorption and replacement by bone at the implant site1.
The Bilok® screw was first developed by Biocomposites in 1995 in collaboration with Prof. James B Richardson and consultant orthopaedic surgeons Mr Steven White (Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic and District Hospital, Oswestry, UK) and Mr Aslam Mohammed (Wrightington Hospital, Wigan, UK).
